A Look Back at Relish Embellish

This time last year, Relish Embellish was taking off at five centres across the Network. What better time to look back at how the project went.

Over 90 residents were engaged in the 160 hours of Relish Embellish cafe workshops. All participants reported behavioural change based on what they’d learnt about the impact of textile waste on the planet, while learning new skills and meeting new people. Residents enjoyed the ‘talking and doing’ aspects of the workshops, where a discussion about the climate impacts of fast fashion would go hand in hand with practical activities.

The five centres involved, Hornsey Lane, Caxton House, Hilldrop, St Luke’s and The Arc, created a Padlet, where their creations are shared for all to see.

Our Save the Christmas Jumper campaign reached over 14,000 people on social media, raising awareness of the number of jumpers wasted each year, and encouraging upcycling and jumper swaps instead of buying new.

I enjoy coming to the centre. I have learned so much about the fashion industry and what we are doing to the planet. When I started, I did not have any experience of using a sewing machine or how to repair clothing or alter clothes to make them fit better. I have learned new skills and feel confident in making my old clothes into something new and unique
